Confidentiality of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Client Records

Client records related to alcohol and drug treatment are protected by federal law (42 CFR Part 2). Disclosure is permitted only with written client consent, a court order, or in medical emergencies, research, audit, or program evaluation circumstances.

Federal law does not protect information related to crimes committed at the program, threats of crimes, or suspected child abuse or neglect, which must be reported under state law.
